Programs Early Reading Readiness:Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation began the Early Reading Readiness program in 2002 in response to national studies showing that reinforced efforts to help struggling readers paid off in the long run by helping those students achieve national competency benchmarks. Through the Early Reading Readiness program, under-performing readers in all eleven elementary schools in the district are identified in first grade and provided targeted, one-on-one assistance to improve reading ability. Assessment tools are used twice yearly to determine growth. Out of 164 students served in Year 1 of the program, 162 showed documented growth in reading levels ranging from one to three levels. Direct experience with our schools is hard to come by for the area’s residents without children in schools. Principal for A Day gives key business, civic and opinion leaders the experience and opportunity to get directly to the heart of the unique challenges and successes in public schools today by experiencing firsthand the power of being principal. Guest principals are introduced to key school performance measures and activities to increase student achievement for all students, including English language learners, minority and high-poverty students. Principal for a Day helps community leaders acknowledge the challenges of educating all students to the state’s high performance goals and determining where the community can add strategic value to those efforts. |
